SLF has begun to work more closely with the African nations and understands their importance for the global leather industry, both in terms of environmental responsibility and also from a socio-economic perspective.  It remains vital that we support all regions to improve their performance across ESG in this new regulatory era, and working with ALLPI will ensure that we can support from within and recognise specific regional challenges within the process.  We are looking forward to supporting ALLPI in the delivery of training, assessments and audits for their members”.

This collaboration highlights our shared commitment to the long-term sustainability of the leather industry. As an institution focused on advancing the African leather sector, we are eager to combine our efforts with SLF to promote responsible environmental practices, while addressing socio-economic challenges unique to our region. We look forward to the valuable training, assessments, and audits SLF will help deliver, which will no doubt enhance the performance of our members and the industry at large. Together, we will strengthen the leather value chain across Africa and globally”

Africa Leather and Leather Products Institute (ALLPI), previously known as COMESA/LLPI, was chartered in 1990, with the endorsement of 17 COMESA Heads of States. The COMESA Council of Ministers in its Thirty-Seventh Meeting decided that starting from 1st January 2018 COMESA – Leather and Leather Products Institute to be rebranded as Africa Leather and Leather Products Institute (ALLPI). ALLPI’s main Mandate is to support the development of the leather sector in the region.

ALLPI is headquartered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; and its membership encompasses ten countries, namely; Burundi, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda, Sudan, Zambia and Zimbabwe. It is also working with Djibouti, DRC, Madagascar and Swaziland under Consultancy services and potential for them to become members in the near future.

Established in 2020, Sustainable Leather Foundation’s vision is to enable collective improvement and education globally, for more sustainable practices in leather manufacture and production. SLF is concerned with all aspects of sustainability – Environmental, Social and Governance. As a not-for-profit organisation, the Foundation provides a transparent and inclusive approach to demonstrating sustainable good practice throughout the value chain.

SLF’s Transparency Dashboard™ and Accessible, Inclusive, Modular (A.I.M.) approach to certification alleviates duplication of effort, by first recognising any existing certifications and mapping them onto the Dashboard before then evaluating any gaps in performance or certification.  This provides an equitable and accessible model that gives brands and other value chain customers a real methodology for creating strong partnerships with their suppliers both now and into the future.
